Kickstarter: A reusable ceramic coffee filter to rule them

I have to admit that although I really want to like reusable coffee filters, I just...can't. Although there are many reusable filters of various materials-laser etched metal, cloth, net, you can name it-they can make very beautiful coffee, but I have not found a kind of My filter with close clarity is obtained from a good ole paper filter. But hope will always exist, there is a reusable filter available for me to use, and with Loca (stylized LOCA), I may have just found it. Loca is made entirely of ceramics. It is a reusable filter that can enhance the clarity and sweetness of coffee. It is now online on Kickstarter.

Calling Loca a coffee filter almost feels a bit reductive. Yes, it is a filter, but it does not require a dumping device, and it is a very beautiful filter. Meaning "filter" in Japanese, Loca applied centuries-old Japanese ceramic technology to modern purposes, creating a novel use: brewing coffee. The Loca filter is a bowl or more traditional pouring cone. It is made of porous ceramic material and consists of an entire 50-micron pore that allows the coffee to pass through but not the coffee grounds.

According to Kickstarter, this filtering method can remove impurities that cause "pungent and strange taste" in coffee. Compared with standard paper filters, it will increase sweetness and reduce sourness, astringency, saltiness and bitterness. The filter is so good at reducing bitterness that Loca actually recommends using it with dark roasted coffee to let the roasted sweetness shine without additional roasted flavor. Kickstarter pointed out that with medium and light roasts, the taste of coffee may be "a little bit lighter than usual."

According to Loca, each filter is handmade by artisans using “traditional techniques”. The zero waste filter is easy to clean and only needs to be rinsed with hot water. Or, if there is material clogging it, you can burn it, which, frankly, sounds a bit annoying.

With only more than two weeks left in the event, Loca Kickstarter's revenue was nearly 15 times its target of 200,000 yen ($1,818), and it still provided some generous rewards for interested parties. The small round filter of the Loca ceramic filter is only $33, the regular round filter is only $41 (my personal favorite), and the V-shaped filter is only $45. Each comes with a suitable size filter holder. For those who want more, Loca also has rewards, including a filter and a very attractive porcelain beaker.

But there is still hope to provide me with reusable coffee filters. For more information or support for this project, please visit the Loca Kickstarter page.
