As crews continue tackling the Electra Fire, which forced evacuations in Amador and Calaveras counties, one company is trying to help protect properties in those areas.

Wildfire Safety Solutions, a relatively new company that began operating about eight months ago, works to protect homes and businesses in Northern California against the threat of wildfires. While many evacuation orders and warnings due to the Electra Fire are still in effect, Wildfire Safety Solutions has been busy the past few days going into communities outside of those zones.

"We're actually located in Amador and Calaveras counties, so this one's kind of personal,” Wildfire Safety Solutions Co-Owner Lance Doyle said. “We wanted to take care of our neighbors.”

KCRA 3 caught up with the company as they worked on a property in Pioneer, which is in Amador County and not too far from the Electra Fire. Workers installed ember-proof gutter guards on the home. Doyle said those can make all the difference.

"These are real fine mesh, like a 16th inch mesh, which allows water to get through, but nothing else, including the embers,” Doyle said. "The reality is there are estimates as high as 90% of homes that are burning are from the ember storms that are generated from these big events."

The company also works to install ember-proof vents.

Wildfire Safety Solutions’ other co-owner Paul Machi sprayed fire retardant on the trees and dry grass surrounding the property in Pioneer. Machi said the product they use is known as “long-term” fire retardant, which means it can last for months.

"If I can get lower into the trees … [the] vegetation won't be able to hold a flame,” Machi said.

Machi also sprayed the retardant on certain structures, such as the homeowner’s deck.

"I like to get under the decks where they're low, in case we get an ember build-up or material that builds up underneath there,” Machi said.

Machi added that while they are happy to help with fire prevention efforts in the wake of the Electra Fire, Wildfire Safety Solutions encourages anyone who is interested in retardant, gutter guards and vents to take action before fires ignite.

"We try to tell people not to wait. With these materials, there's no reason to wait,” Machi said.

Wildfire Safety Solutions gave KCRA 3 a general cost breakdown for their products and services. For the fire retardant, the average cost for the “cabin-type” homes is around $1,250. Larger estates can be much more than that. Wildfire Safety Solutions said the gutter guards run from between $12 and $15 per foot. In terms of vents, the company said they have something for everyone’s budget.

The most expensive items are the BrandGuard vents, but Wildfire Safety Solutions said they can retrofit them with basic screen vents, which would still meet the minimum Cal Fire requirements. It would be around $1,000 for a “cabin-type” home.
